Be careful what you follow
“Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good, he that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.” III John 11
If you are under a certain age, you are probably familiar with the idea of “following” someone on twitter. To those of us over that certain age, it sounds a little creepy. To follow someone you must be interested in that person’s everyday life-even the incidentals.
In this verse the apostle is telling us to make a judgment call on what is good and what is evil. In the context (the verses around this one) he is making the point that some people who call themselves Christians and church goers are involved in evil things. Even if they say that they are believers in Jesus we shouldn’t follow them or be concerned about their opinions or ideas if they are engaged in activity that is evil and destructive. If someone is bitter and angry- they are involved in evil things. If someone is good and kind—they are the ones we should follow.
This is also true of the news. A constant diet of conspiracy news is actually going to make you paranoid and afraid of your own shadow. BTW your shadow is harmless. If all you hear in the cacophony of streaming news sources is anger and fear, you should unplug from that. You have the opportunity to choose who you will listen to. Choose wisely.
