It's not the pizza's fault

“There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him , those are they that defile the man.” Mark 7:15

This statement is completely opposite of the average religious idea. We have this notion that if we isolate ourselves from sinful environments, we will keep ourselves clean. The holiest among us are careful to separate from all things worldly– and this is done be sheer discipline and self sacrifice. When we succeed in isolating ourselves, we feel like we have arrived at the level of spirituality necessary to win favor with God.

But Jesus said that it isn’t what is around us that makes us unholy; it isn’t our culture or our environment. It is, instead, the corruption that we find inside of us; it is our own perverseness that makes us unholy. We must deal with ourselves before the world around us can change.
